A study of wood, knots and bark extractives from oak and beech (EU) and Douglas fir (EU + USA + Canada) over the period 1950-2020

We present a dataset of wood, knots and bark extractives from 4 forest species tree grown and processed in the eastern France (Quercus robur, Quercus petraea, Fagus sylvatica, Pseudotsuga menziesii).The data were extracting from an analysis of the scientific literature review (59 articles). The data concern different tissues of the tree (wood, sapwood, heartwood, knot, bark) and provides information on (i) the extraction process used, the chemical content of extracts and extractives determination (ii) the bioactivity of the extracts (iii) the metadata of the extracts. All the data is contained in the 3 export files of the Wood_db-chemistry database at a given time.

Purpose

This dataset has been created to facilitate access to the knowledge already acquired on wood, knots and bark extractives within the ExtraFor_Est scientific project. By consulting the Wood_db-chemistry database, we will be able to gain a better understanding of the heterogeneity of the extractives, primarily secondary metabolites and of their quantity in the forest biomass. Consultation of the database will make it possible to disseminate knowledge on the study of extractives for research purposes and to raise awareness of the chemistry of woody plants among those involved in forestry and the timber industry.
